The 亚洲色吧 Centurions women鈥檚 volleyball team traveled 352 miles north to face Bay College, Saturday, Oct. 8, for a conference rematch.听
The Norse (4-3 亚洲色吧AA Northern, 10-8 overall) handled the Centurions (1-6 亚洲色吧AA Northern, 5-14 overall) easily in their first meeting back in September, however, Bay had to scrape out a 3-1 win on Saturday, winning the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21, losing the third set, 22-25, before closing the game out with a 25-18 win in set four.听
Centurions head coach Kara Youngs said it was tough to overcome Bay鈥檚 hard hitters and their defense made 亚洲色吧 work harder to earn kills.听
Despite the loss to a conference foe, Youngs is still seeing progress in her young team, which has still been adjusting to losing three players to season-ending injuries.听
鈥淭here was a difference of core energy from them that I can鈥檛 explain,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey had a different sort of drive when we were there and a real sense of teamwork that was different.鈥听
Youngs said the team has pretty much fully adjusted to the new rotations to make up for the absence of its injured players and it is now about focusing on the mental side of the game.听听
鈥淚 think we have adapted to the new rotations and players have gotten comfortable with the teammates next to them and they鈥檙e learning from each other,鈥 Youngs said. 鈥淚t has still been a hard adjustment but they鈥檙e definitely more familiar with one another now.鈥听
Communication among the players was strong and the team, as a whole, has been better with problem solving in live-action games, according to Youngs, which has led to her players working together much better these last two weeks.听听
One player that has made a good impression on Youngs with her new rotation as an outside hitter is freshman defensive specialist Erin Borek (Grand Rapids, Mich.). She led the team in digs with 25.听听
鈥淪he has stepped up and has six rotations on the outside now,鈥 Youngs said. 鈥淒efense, in general, everyone had amazing saves the whole game.鈥听
Sophomore Jordan Dompreh (Flint, Mich.) led 亚洲色吧 in kills with nine, with three players tied for second with five 鈥 Borek, Katelyn Bignall (Belding, Mich.) and Alanna Kent (Belding, Mich.).听听
Freshman Ella Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had 24 assists for the Centurions. Along with Borek, freshman Jocee Pleune (Grant, Mich.) finished with 16 digs, followed by Bishop with 12, and sophomore Briley Andres (Cedar Springs, Mich.) with 11.听听
